On Saturday we took ourselves to see Inception in Poitiers. We went a little early so we could do a bit of sight-seeing, since we hadn't yet visited the center of Poitiers. It's a 2-hour drive there, so we were happy that Europe "fell back" in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
The center of Poitiers is very attractive, set high on a hill. There are many one-way streets and lots of constructions, so finding a parking place was challenging. We saw lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Our time being a bit limited, we visited only one of the many beautiful Romanesque churches to see there.
This is Notre-Dame-la-Grande, built in the second half of the 11C. The carvings on the façade are in remarkably good repair. There is some old painting inside, as well as some out-of-sync updates from the 19C.
Now that we've been there, we will definitely make an effort to plan some longer visits to the area.
During the day Sunday, Kaye was startled to answer the door to a trick-or-treater accompanied by her mother. She didn't have the presence of mind to grab a camera, but she did find some candy to add to the loot. The next day, Ed's choir sang at the All Saints' Day service at the church in Montbron. This is a major holiday in France, one of the big go-to-church days.
Tuesday morning, Ed took the car for its 2-yearly inspection, only to find that the lift at the shop was broken and they were rescheduling all appointments for two weeks away. Luckily that's still a few days before our sticker expires.
Further, it's been pretty quiet. All the scaffolding has been taken down. They've left a smaller scaffold for Ed to use for some high-up repointing. Our motley collection of old tiles on the South Forty has tripled with the ones removed from the roof. We've had a new load of wood delivered which should keep the kitchen warm through the winter.
The fall weather continues to be gorgeous and the trees are full of colors.
