Time for crêpes

If Candlemas Day is clear and bright,
winter will have another bite.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
winter is gone and will not come again.

Indeed crêpes have a season. Who knew? The season begins forty days after Christmas, 2 February, with the feast day called Chandeleur (Candelmas or Candlemas). (There are weather-related traditions for this day, and it seems to have evolved in Groundhog Day.) The season starts at 8pm on 2-Feb and extends till Mardi Gras, when you can stuff yourself with crêpes in preparation for Lent.

Yesterday, while taking the dog and cat for a walk (yes, the cat comes along too sometimes), we met a group of neighbors returning from their walk with enormous sacksful of freshly dug pissenlits (dandelions), young leaves, each rosette with a bit of the root attached. They were taking them home to cook with haricots. They must have been feeding a small army. Ed suggested they clean them in their washing machine, which got a laugh. (The cat gets very nervous when we meet strangers on the way. She was dashing down the road when she spotted the Scary Strangers, and immediately made a left turn to climb the embankment at the side of the road. This was comical to see. After the Scary Strangers pass, it takes her quite a bit of time to calm down and join us on our walk.)

Ed neglected to notice that the fioul (fuel oil) tank was getting low, so we're out of fioul now. We've been using diesel gas to keep away the icicles. Apparently this is a more refined version of fioul and is safe (we hope) to use, if expensive. Kaye sounded pitiful when she called to order more fioul, but they said it would be Monday or Tuesday this week before they were in our area. And they still haven't called to make an appointment for delivery, so it looks like we need to make another expedition to be more diesel.

Kaye got up to a green world last Wednesday and looked out the window an hour later to find it completely white. A week later there are still some patches of snow. After some freezing days, it's warmed up a bit now and the roads are clear again.
