On Sunday we again participated in the ralleye touristique, as we did last year. Again, lots of walking, but lots of interesting sites to see. On the way to our nearby bird sanctuary, we passed this dolmen that we had never noticed before, although we pass it frequently:
Our lunch was conveniently arranged at a hall where we could have eaten indoors if it had been raining (as predicted). Instead, we carried the tables outside and ate in a park. The afternoon included organized visits to a Gallic village reconstruction in progress (Ed and Pogo on the left):
We had a guided tour of several rooms at the Chateau Rochebrune, which is not normally open to the public. We found this character guarding the bridge over the moat:
On our way to a local adventure park, we stopped at the church in Grenord, which still has a bit of (XIIC?) painted wall showing a trumpet-playing angel on the the right:
Back in Mazerolles, we had to climb to the top of La Motte to hand in our answers. We stayed for apertif, which was scheduled for 6pm, but served about 7:00, heard the answers to all the questions, and received our prize sack (two bottles of wine, some tickets to another Cognac distillery, and other junk). Our team was a resounding last, of course, but we got a round of applause for our effort. We got home after 8:30, had omelettes for dinner, and fell into bed.
After a busy ten days, Bill returned to Amsterdam Tuesday. Since then we've done lots of laundry, gardening, done another quiz/dinner (came in third this time), and visited the Phoenix Association booksale. All the normal kinds of things.
